Alexander Mooney is a critic, programmer, and filmmaker based in Toronto.

His writing can be found in Reverse Shot, Slant, The Globe and Mail, Documentary Magazine, Sight and Sound, Toronto Star, In Review Online, Little White Lies, Screen Slate, and Bright Wall/Dark Room. He is also author of the column “Replications,” which explores remakes and retellings at In the Mood Magazine.

He is an active member of GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, and was awarded the 2025 Telefilm Canada Emerging Critic prize by the Toronto Film Critics Association. He is available for commissions via email.

During his final year at U of T he was one of the programmers for the Cinema Studies Student Union (CINSSU), where he curated and introduced public screenings for their Free Friday Films and WTF Wednesday series at Innis Town Hall.

In his work, he is committed to exploring the formal and semiotic significance embedded in historical articulations of queer desire, from repressed sexualities in Hollywood movies to explicit depictions in adult films.
